Have you been thinking about using rivets but get really confused?

Rivets can seem intimidating at first, but once you understand the basics, they're a straightforward way to add durability and style to your projects.

Whether you're working on wristlets, bags, or decorative pieces, choosing the right rivet size is the foundation of a successful installation.

Rivet are selected by two measurements: the cap diameter and the post length. For example, an 8mm x 8mm rivet has an 8mm cap and an 8mm post. Understanding what these numbers mean will help you select the perfect rivet for your project.

The most common rivet size is 8mm x 8mm, which works well for a wide range of applications. If you're creating wristlets or adding decorative accents to your makes, 8mm x 6mm rivets are an excellent choice—the shorter post is ideal for thinner materials. For heavier-duty work with thick leather or multiple layers of vinyl, 8mm x 10mm rivets provide the extra length needed for a secure hold.

The key to getting professional results is matching the post length to your material thickness. A post that's too short won't close properly, while one that's too long can create a weak connection, a wobbly cap, or unsightly deformation.

Choose the rivet post length

The rivet post should be:

  • about 1–2 mm longer than the material thickness for double-cap rivets
  • slightly longer for tubular or solid rivets that get peened

Too short:

  • rivet won’t close properly

Too long:

  • weak connection
  • wobbly cap
  • ugly deformation ( indent after installing the rivet cap)

Quick sizing guide

Material thickness once ready for the rivet Rivet post length
2–3 mm 4 mm rivet
3–4 mm 6 mm rivet
4–5 mm 7–8 mm rivet
5–7 mm 9–10 mm rivet

Installing rivets.. you will need either the tool sets and a 1 or 2 mm hole punch

or a Kam Press and the Rivet die sets

We will explain these more in the Kam Press Blog.

Once you have your preferred tool, you will need to put a hole through your make with your selected hole punch, then your ready to insert your rivet. Place the post through the hole first, then place the cap onto the post that is only just poking through and you will feel it slightly click into place.

Now with the tool you have selected push the two parts of the rivet together.

Did you get a squashed cap or not a nice smooth finish? If this happened the rivet post is too long. Keep this in mind for installing the next rivet.
